Wildlife Wonders, 08.11 - 08.13

Day 1: Today we focused on one very mysterious but beautiful animal: owls! We read about baby owls and then painted one using cotton balls! Then we got to visit a real great horned owl! We hiked through the forest and searched for wildlife as high up as birds in the sky and as low as the worms in the soil. At the end of the day, we go to dissect owl pellets and found so many different animal bones inside!

Day 2: Today we went back to visit our owl friend and got to do something really cool… we fed her some mice! She is injured so we watched as she slowly hopped down the platforms where she ate them right up. Then we went over to Sarah, the red tailed hawk, and fed her some mice too! Her wings and talons are huge so we stood back as we watched her swoop down to grab the food we left for her. We then fed one last animal, Autumn the deer. We got to go inside her enclosure and put food right into her feeding box. After the animals were fed we headed out on a hike where we found a bridge that completely submerges into the river because of all the rain we’ve had. This was such a fun place to walk and splash around. As if this day couldn’t get any better, we got to go back inside where we explored different animals furs, including a huge wolf pelt!

Day 3: Today we started the day by feeding our furry friends again. This was a really cool way to see the animals up-close and be a part of their care taking. We learned about habitats and where different animals live, then went on a hike to search for animal homes in the forest. For the final day of camp, we had the muddiest mud kitchen experience yet! We fully embraced the mess and made all the mud foods you can think of! We even used mud to paint and give Miss Leigh mud tattoos!
